Adding universal shortcuts in ubuntu/gnome

The default keyboard shortcut application in gnome, as you might have noticed, isn't worth very much. You can only assign keyboard shortcuts to a list of predefined commands. Not very valuable really. It is however possible to define up to 12 custom keyboard shortcuts in a slightly more complicated manner. (Some people have said it's possible to define up to 32 shortcuts, but I haven't been able to define more than 12.Read more »

SSH login without password

If you use SSH from the shell often you might be getting tired of entering your password over and over again. If you often log on to other machines from your machine via SSH, be it work, school, or just other machines on your LAN? Then this can be a real timesaver. Doing this is also a must if you want to mount remote file systems via SSHFS boot time. Warning! Only do this on machines you trust. If you are on a public machine, it’s probably a good idea to not do this.Read more »

Syncml Push Messages

I've finally had time to sit down and do some research on syncml push notification. Basically what I've done is made a perl script that kicks in when funambols log is changed. It then checks if the log any changes have occurred what device initiated the changes. If it decides that these are changes that the my cell phone needs to know about, it sends a push message to my phone telling it to update, and my phone automatically updates. It also sends different messages depending upon what needs to be updated; calendar, contacts or both.

1D barcodes - user question

Lately I've got a lot of questions about 1D barcodes (a common 1D barcode is the barcode you find on any item at the local grocery store) both via e-mail and on certain forums. A lot of people are wondering why it's so hard to find a cell phone barcode scanner that supports 1D barcodes. A lot of people also are under the impression that 1D barcodes contain some sort of "secret" information. The truth however is that they only contain the same serial number you see below the code. I'm going to post the last question and my reply here.

Free pushmail with IMAP IDLE howto

ScreenshotDid you now that is possible to get totally free pushmail on your symbian phone? All you pay for is data traffic if you use via GPRS/UMTS. And if you have a good data traffic plan it would be totally free. The solution works really great via WLAN, and on most GPRS/UMTS networks. Some operators however automatically close idle connections, but often this can be avoided by forcing the access point (AP) to give you a public IP-address.Read more »

Installing funambol and synchronizing

Funambol logoThis is a quick and dirty guide how to install and configure your own funambol server (The example is on Debian linux, but procedure is similar for other linux distros. It is also possible to install funambol on windows, if you don't have a linux server to install it on)

The guide will also show you how to set up user accounts, and use them to synchronize contacts and calendars on your N80 and with outlook. The procedure is the same on all symbian 3rd edition phones. Any syncml compatible device should be able to do the same, but the procedure might differ. You can also sync other applications and devices (like pda's).Read more »
